West Virginia Coach Tells Truth, School Pretends It Never Happened

In the wild world of the NCAA, we're forced to swallow a lot of crap from coaches about educating the future, turning boys into men, etc. So honesty is pretty refreshing on the rare chance that it occurs. Today, West Virginia football coach Dana Holgorsen gave us an unfiltered peek into the world of recruiting, an apocalyptic hellscape dominated by old white people with money to burn and desperate coaches. Here's Holgorsen, per SI, which brings us this quote from Holgorsen's post-practice press conference: "I know you lie in recruiting a bunch, and that's just part of it." Holgorsen said. "What are we actually doing? What are we actually feeding these guys? Our job is to get guys on campus." That's not too terrible; it's basically what we expect from recruiting. Hell, anyone who has ever taken a college campus tour has been lied to about the school they're thinking of attending. Instead of defending Holgorsen's quote, though, or just letting it be, West Virginia apparently tried to erase it completely. Here's how that transcript of Holgorsen's presser SI linked to now reads at the West Virginia athletics website: "There are a lot of questions, but we will figure it out. It's about what reality is. What are we actually doing? What are we actually feeding these guys? Our job is to get guys on campus." West Virginia appears to be going for the memory hole strategy. We'll see how it works out for them.
